When our neighbourhood group proposed a garden beside the library, I imagined we would spend every Saturday planting flowers. In fact, our first month involved no planting at all. We had to ask who owned the land, agree how to collect water and make sure wheelchairs could reach the beds. These discussions felt slow, but they prevented problems later. The library offered us a narrow strip of land for one year. We raised money for soil through a book sale, while a local builder donated wood for raised beds. Twelve volunteers joined at first, although only seven could come regularly. Rather than expect everyone every week, we created a short list of jobs that people could choose from. Our first harvest was small: a few bags of salad leaves and some herbs. We gave these to the library’s cooking group. For me, the main success was not the amount of food. People who had previously only nodded in the street were now sharing tools and advice. We are applying to use the land for a second year. We want more beds, but only if we can maintain them with our current volunteers. An impressive opening day means little if nobody can water the plants in August.
