Questions & answers

Opening an answer records help for that question.

P01 · Build the skill

Write an invented review of a cafe you visited. Do not present it as a real customer review.

Write 120–150 words. Describe the cafe, give specific strengths and a weakness, and explain who you would recommend it to.

Answer & explanation
The fictional Willow Cafe is a small place beside the bus station. I visited it after a long morning of shopping and found it welcoming without being expensive. The vegetable soup tasted fresh, and the staff explained which dishes contained nuts when another customer asked. There were several small tables near the window, making it a comfortable place to read alone. However, the room became quite noisy when a large group arrived, so I would not choose it for an important online meeting. Service was also slower after noon, although the staff warned me before I ordered. Overall, I would recommend the cafe to travellers or people wanting a simple lunch. Those looking for complete silence should come early or find somewhere else. Its strongest feature is friendly, clear service rather than a fashionable interior.

One possible model, not an answer key. Self-check: Can a reader find all these required points: what you tried, your overall impression, specific strengths, one weakness and a recommendation for a named audience? Structure: Introduce what is being reviewed, support strengths and a weakness with details, and recommend it to a specific audience. “The fictional Willow Cafe” → “However, the room became quite noisy”. Language: “However, the room became quite noisy when a large group arrived, so I would not choose it for an important online meeting.” The contrast connects a benefit with a limitation; do not use a linking word unless the ideas really contrast. Other wording and organisation can meet the task. Keep any supplied facts. This is self-review, not an automatic language score.

P02 · Build the skill

Write an invented review of a beginner photography workshop. Do not claim a real attendance record.

Write 120–150 words. Explain the workshop, strengths, one weakness and which learners it might suit.

Answer & explanation
The fictional Clear View photography workshop is designed for beginners. The class lasted one afternoon and focused on using an ordinary phone camera. The tutor explained each idea briefly, then sent us outside to practise it. This balance worked well because we could immediately see how changing the light or position affected a picture. I also liked the final discussion, where participants explained why they had chosen one photograph. The main weakness was the printed guide: its images were too small to show some differences clearly. A digital version would have helped. I would recommend this workshop to people who want a relaxed introduction without buying special equipment. Experienced photographers would probably find it too basic, but beginners could leave with a few practical techniques and more confidence to experiment.
