Many digital services promise to remove every pause between wanting something and obtaining it. A saved payment method, a recommended purchase and a single button can turn a passing interest into an order within seconds. Convenience has obvious value, especially for people whose time or mobility is limited. Yet treating every moment of hesitation as a design failure confuses speed with a good decision. Consider a subscription that renews automatically. Clear reminders and an uncomplicated cancellation process protect the customer. A short confirmation before the first payment can also be helpful, provided that it explains the price and renewal terms. That pause is different from forcing customers through several confusing pages when they try to leave. Both add friction, but only the former helps people understand the commitment they are making. The distinction should depend on whose interests the interruption serves. A warning that prevents an accidental transfer supports the user’s goal. A pop-up that repeatedly delays cancellation mainly protects the seller’s revenue. Designers cannot defend the second simply by pointing out that users clicked through it. Completing an action under pressure does not demonstrate satisfaction with the process. This does not mean that every purchase should require a lengthy questionnaire. Excessive warnings become background noise, and users may ignore the one message that matters. The aim should be a small amount of well-placed resistance where the consequences are significant or hard to reverse. A routine, low-cost action may need none. Good design therefore requires judgement about context, not a universal demand for either speed or delay. A useful pause gives people relevant information and a genuine choice; an obstructive pause makes their existing choice harder to carry out. Measuring only how quickly people finish a process will fail to capture that difference.

D01 · Échauffement

The case for useful inconvenience

What assumption does the writer challenge?

  1. That faster completion always means better design.
  2. A routine low-cost action may need no extra warning.
  3. A useful payment confirmation explains price and renewal terms.
  4. Convenience can help people with limited time or mobility.
Réponse et explication
That faster completion always means better design.

La réponse étayée est « That faster completion always means better design. ». Indice : « treating every moment of hesitation as a design failure confuses speed with a good decision. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « Convenience can help people with limited time or mobility. ». Examinez le passage « Convenience has obvious value, especially for people whose time or mobility is limited. » en tenant compte de la question et de l’affirmation « Convenience can help people with limited time or mobility. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « A useful payment confirmation explains price and renewal terms. ». Examinez le passage « provided that it explains the price and renewal terms. ».

D02 · Échauffement

The case for useful inconvenience

  1. It establishes satisfaction once the customer clicks through.
  2. It can clarify price and renewal terms.
  3. It is useful even when renewal conditions are not explained.
  4. It makes the customer work harder to carry out a cancellation.
Réponse et explication
It can clarify price and renewal terms.

La réponse étayée est « It can clarify price and renewal terms. ». Indice : « provided that it explains the price and renewal terms. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « It makes the customer work harder to carry out a cancellation. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « It establishes satisfaction once the customer clicks through. ».

The case for useful inconvenience

What does “the former” refer to in the second paragraph?

  1. The informative confirmation before the first payment.
  2. The confusing cancellation pages.
  3. The reminder and cancellation arrangements considered together.
  4. The automatic renewal mentioned at the start of the example.
Réponse et explication
The informative confirmation before the first payment.

La réponse étayée est « The informative confirmation before the first payment. ». Indice : « A short confirmation before the first payment can also be helpful ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « The confusing cancellation pages. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « The automatic renewal mentioned at the start of the example. ».

The case for useful inconvenience

What criterion should distinguish useful from harmful friction?

  1. The time an extra step adds to the process.
  2. Whether the interruption improves the seller’s completion rate.
  3. Whose interests the interruption serves.
  4. Whether users manage to finish despite the interruption.
Réponse et explication
Whose interests the interruption serves.

La réponse étayée est « Whose interests the interruption serves. ». Indice : « whose interests the interruption serves. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « The time an extra step adds to the process. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « Whether the interruption improves the seller’s completion rate. ».

The case for useful inconvenience

Why is clicking through a process insufficient evidence of satisfaction?

  1. The action may have been completed under pressure.
  2. The people who completed it necessarily represent dissatisfied customers.
  3. The record does not reveal how long the process took.
  4. The transaction cost matters more than how the choice was made.
Réponse et explication
The action may have been completed under pressure.

La réponse étayée est « The action may have been completed under pressure. ». Indice : « Completing an action under pressure does not demonstrate satisfaction with the process. ». Comparez l’autre proposition : « The record does not reveal how long the process took. ».
