解答と解説を開く
Dear Festival Coordinator,

I am writing to apply for the volunteer visitor assistant role at your community arts festival. I would welcome the opportunity to help people enjoy local creative work while contributing to an event that brings different neighbourhood groups together.

Last year, I helped at my college’s open day. I greeted visitors, explained where presentations were taking place and guided families between buildings. This taught me to give clear directions and to check that people had understood rather than simply repeating the same information.

I also volunteer at a weekly language exchange, where I help new participants feel comfortable joining a conversation. These experiences have made me patient and confident when speaking with unfamiliar people.

I can attend both Saturdays and would be available for a training session on the preceding weekday evenings. I am happy to work indoors or outside and understand that the schedule may change during a busy public event.

Could you tell me whether assistants receive a map and an updated programme before each shift? Having those materials would help me prepare and answer visitors’ questions accurately.

Thank you for considering my application. I would be pleased to provide a reference if required.

Yours faithfully,
Elena Ward

Fictional opportunity: a local history centre offers a short student placement helping to organise photographs and collect residents’ memories. It requires careful record keeping and respectful communication.

Write an application letter of 180–220 words. Describe your interest, connect two relevant skills to the tasks, give your available dates, and explain what you hope to learn.

解答と解説を開く
Dear Placement Supervisor,

I would like to apply for the student placement at the local history centre. I am particularly interested in the way ordinary photographs and personal memories can reveal changes that official summaries sometimes overlook.

Through a college project about our shopping street, I learned to label digital photographs consistently and keep a record of where each image came from. I understand why a useful collection needs accurate descriptions as well as attractive material, and I would be willing to spend time checking details carefully.

I have also helped interview older members of my family for a school presentation. I prepared questions beforehand, listened without interrupting and asked permission before recording anything. This experience showed me the importance of allowing people to decide what they wish to share.

I would be available from the first Monday in July until the end of that month, including three weekdays each week.

I hope to learn how a professional collection manages uncertain dates and conflicting accounts without presenting guesses as established facts. I would appreciate the chance to discuss how I could support the centre’s current work.

Thank you for considering my application.

Yours faithfully,
Amir Hussain

Fictional opportunity: a university runs a peer study-support programme. Helpers organise small sessions, encourage participation and refer specialist questions to tutors.

Write 180–220 words applying to become a helper. Explain why you are suitable, describe a challenge you have handled, discuss the limits of the role, and state your availability.

解答と解説を開く
Dear Programme Leader,

I am applying to become a peer study-support helper next term. I enjoy helping students organise their work, and I believe my experience of adapting to university study would allow me to support others without making assumptions about their needs.

During my first year, I organised a small revision group for a difficult introductory course. At first, two confident members answered nearly every question while others remained silent. I introduced short individual preparation periods and invited each person to explain one step. Participation became more balanced, and students began asking questions more openly. This experience taught me that helping a group involves listening and planning, not simply knowing the answers.

I also recognise the limits of the proposed role. I would not give advice about specialist academic or personal problems beyond my training. Instead, I would help students identify the appropriate tutor or university service and encourage them to seek qualified support.

I am available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons throughout next term and can attend the introductory training. I would be grateful for the opportunity to discuss the programme’s expectations and how helpers receive supervision.

Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,
Beth Turner

Fictional project: a nature charity seeks volunteers to help record paths and visitor facilities. Volunteers follow a checklist, work in pairs and avoid disturbing wildlife.

Write an application of 180–220 words. Explain your motivation, describe relevant experience, show that you understand responsible conduct, and state what support you may need.

解答と解説を開く
Dear Volunteer Coordinator,

I would like to join your path and visitor-facility recording project. I regularly walk in local green spaces and would value the opportunity to contribute information that helps the charity plan practical improvements.

In a recent college project, I worked with a partner to record the condition of cycle stands around our campus. We followed a shared checklist, took photographs from consistent positions and checked unclear entries together before submitting them. I would bring the same care to this project, particularly when describing obstacles or facilities that different visitors may experience in different ways.

I understand that recording information should not damage the place being studied. I would stay on permitted paths, keep an appropriate distance from wildlife and follow the charity’s instructions about photographs and access. I would also report uncertainty rather than guess about a feature I could not inspect safely.

I can volunteer on two weekends each month. Before starting, I would need guidance on the recording form and any equipment the charity expects volunteers to use. Please let me know whether an introductory session is available.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
Jack Morgan
